One stunt Ive found very effective is to place an actor in a comedic character costume at the entrance of the theatre acting as an usher. As the people come in, have your usher lead them to seats in the house that are completely ridiculous (such as backstage and/or on the laps of other patrons). The patrons already seated roar with laughter at such antics, and your audience will immediately be warmed up for the show.
Character costumes can also be used in childrens theatre. No matter how you slice it, children positively love mascots. To them, a mascot is like a big puppet.
